- The mantle of the Black Panther is not an honor, but a curse. It is something bestowed upon thieves who steal from the royal throne of Wakanda. It was given to the my grandfather, and he decided to mock the throne by continuously passing it down by generation. But this is where it ends. Now and forever, the Black Panther is an Avenger!
T'Challa was born in the African off-shore country known as Wakanda, ruled by the monarch, Man-Ape. Lord M'Baku, as he preferred to be called, created a curse called the Black Panther Amulet, which would be given to thieves who attempted to steal from him. When T'Challa's grandfather was given the curse, he decided to hide the amulet with his newborn son before he was finally arrested and set for execution.
Growing Up as a Thief
T'Challa's father, T'Chaka, enjoyed being the Black Panther, and he earned the title of Wakanda's Greatest Thief. Though T'Challa disapproved of his family's actions, he was still forced to follow in his father's footsteps and he too became a fairly good thief. When T'Challa was fourteen, his father believed that the two of them are finally ready to rob Lord M'Baku of his crown, which T'Challa was extremely nervous about doing. He feared they would get caught, which they did. He accidentally set off the alarm, but before the guards arrived, T'Chaka gave the amulet to his son and told him to get out and become the new Black Panther. T'Challa did as he was told, but he did not plan on being the next thief.
Escape from Wakanda
Seconds after T'Challa was affected by the amulet, the guards arrived and he jumped up and crashed through the window. A squadron was sent after him, but he got away extremely quickly, and he began thinking why on Earth Lord M'Baku would give this much power to a criminal, but frankly, he didn't care. T'Challa took refuge in the Vibranium Fields and he stole a sample, storing it in his costume. When the guards find him, he manages to get his hands on some Vibranium weapons and he uses them to defend himself. After killing several of the guards, he takes one of them hostage and has them lead him to one of the many escape boats hidden in Wakanda's under water embassy. He spared the guard's life and he quickly escaped. After leaving, he realized that the amulet was making him lose control, which is why he killed the guards with no remorse, and he realized why M'Baku chose it as punishment. T'Challa came to the conclusion that if he was ever going to redeem the Quirobi family, he would have to take control of the Panther, rather than the other way around.
