- Friends with him? Fish-stick, I don't even know him. If I did I'd tell him something like I'm telling you now. You're arrogant, reckless, and your decisions put everyone else's life on the line. So stop messing around and start acting like the hero you're supposed to be.
- War Machine
James was born when his father was still serving in Afghanistan. He didn't meet his father until he was seven years old, and his dad had lost both of his legs in the war, and is close to death. James hated seeing his father in his current state, so he distanced himself so he wouldn't be tortured every day. After his dad died, and the funeral was over, James would never be the same again.
By the time James was eighteen, the war between the Americans and the Afghans was still going on, and each side had begun enhancing their ranks with superhumans. He enlisted in the army and was sent on the next plane to Afghanistan. He proved an extremely valuable soldier, and it wasn't long until he became a Captain. He fought very fiercely in the line of duty and wanted to make sure no soldiers or innocents died on his watch. Eventually, James was kidnapped by the Afghans and he was tortured for information, but he never gave in. He was broken out by a squad of soldiers, but the Afghans had broken both of his legs, rendering him inactive and he was sent back to America.
The War Machine
After returning, all James could think about was his father, and how he had suffered the same fate. He refused to get a wheel chair, so he was forced to remain in bed, which he hated. Eventually, he was approached by a man named Nick Fury, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He offered James the choice to become a super soldier. James accepted and he was given an improved version of the Iron Man Armor, created by Anthony Stark. The armor gave him use of his legs again, and he became extremely grateful to Nick. In return, he joined S.H.I.E.L.D.'s special ops unit, where he did not get along with Hawkeye or Black Widow.
