Quote1 Now, after seven human years, I have finally come to understand your role, your place in the universe and how you came to be here. The eons of human evolution, invention, aspiration...and war. Always war. The oldest, most enduring of human practices. Quote2

Humans (Homo sapiens sapiens, Latin for "man who knows of his knowledge"), also known as Hamanune (plural Hamanush) in the orokin era, are a sapient race of mammals native to Earth. They are some of the newest species to join the larger galactic community.

History

Pre-History

Humanity can trace its origin back to the ancient sapient race known as the xel'naga. These beings were responsible for traveling through the galaxy and not only seeding it with life, but also advancing its civilizations. Alongside their rival race, the orokin, humans were genetically engineered to attain the Mantle. However, while humanity was chosen to receive it, the orokin did not, causing them to rebel against the xel'naga, leading to the War Within, driving the xel'naga to near extinction. Afterwards, the orokin claimed the Mantle for themselves, using it as the base for their empire, the Ecumene, and as a means to justify their racism towards other races, as well as their subjugation and orokin dominance. Modern humans appeared on Earth between approximately 100,000 and 200,000 years ago (an older branch of Homo sapiens known as Homo sapiens idaltu was believed to live as far back as 160,000 BCE).

Despite humanity's exact origin being contested in paleontological debates, one of the most popular theories is that of humans deriving from a genus of hominids called Australopithecus. Homo sapiens was not the only human race to evolve on Earth, with many other branches of the Homo genus appearing. However, all were still collectively known as humanity. Homo erectus, neanderthalensis and floresiensis coexisted with Homo sapiens, sharing many cultural and genetic traits between each other, as well as interbreeding, with 1-4% of the DNA in European and East Asian humans is Neanderthal, while Melanesian people have 4% of Denisovan blood.

Early Civilization and Orokin Contact

The Battle of Charum Hakkor.

Early on their history, humans were able to achieve an advanced state in their society and culture, as multiple cultures and societies were able to reach space travel, quickly expanding through the galaxy and colonizing multiple planets. Humans finally rose to incredible power in 150,000 BCE, challenging even that of the orokin, following a number of technological downfalls. These humans were taller and stronger than modern humans, as well as more intelligent, despising the orokin and their Ecumene that ruled all the galaxy. Because of this, humanity expanded their empire at the edges of the galaxy, where the orokin still had not explored. This empire, known as the Amarr, formed an alliance with the san'shyuum, coming into contact with the extragalactic race known as the flood. This led to both humans and san'shyuum losing most of their populations aside from core worlds, but the necromorphs were driven out of the galaxy. The human response, however, led to a series of conflicts with the orokin known as the Wars Within, leading to the fall of humanity at the Charum Hakkor.

As punishment for the destruction of Ecumene worlds, humans were stripped of their advancements, having the evidence of their civilization erased from the galaxy, with the remnants of the race exiled to Earth and devolved to primitive states, thus being forced to re-start developing what they once had. Humans became one of the few races to survive the necromorph onslaught on the galaxy, and so were indexed in the Ark by the Librarian as per the Conservation Measure. Despite most of the population being composed by the Ur-Didact on Omega Halo, the Librarian and Chant-to-Green were able to save enough individuals to revitalize humanity. After the activation of the Halo Array, humans were returned to Earth through a keyships, and the first race to be reintroduced by the orokin.

Rebuilding

AncientHumans

The development of current human civilization started with the ability to harness the growth cycle of planets, allowing the production of edible food-energy in systemic fashion. This period of time was referred as the Neolithic Revolution, which occurred on Earth 10,000 years in the past, and then spread through diasporal human groups. Coming stability originated from systemic agriculture, which allowed the settling of permanent homes and development of complex tools to benefit humans. Innovative toolmaking and domestication of animals only served to advance human populations, allowing them to expand even more and trade goods with one another.

These populations led to the formation of the first formal civilizations 8,500 years in the past. These cultures have sites believed to have formed in Southwest Asia and Asia Minor, appearing in other locations not long after. Their civilizations and infrastructure continued to develop, expanding in complexity with the discovery of innovative technologies and the growth of large populations, which ultimately allowed for the increasing food-energy availability to thrive. Advancements in economics, society, politics and science lingered on, granting the race the power to automate once manual labor in the Industrial Revolution.

18th-20th centuries

The 18th through the 20th centuries saw enormous changes for the countries where the Industrial Revolution took place. In the aftermath of the unintended political and economic shifts through the refinery of capitalist resource management techniques led to the development of the automobile, the radio, the television, aircraft, among many others which were unheard or previously though impossible. Revolutionary progress was made into the development of medicine and chemistry, such as the discovery of anesthesia and penicillin, forever altering all following surgical and medical practices. Before these breakthroughs, humans' average lifespans reached 45 years, but thanks to the discovery of antibiotics and other forms of medication, the lifespan severely increased to 80 and beyond.

Humans virtually grew in efficiency and power in three centuries more than they did in the last millennium. Arts, science, and military forces also followed soon, with armed conflicts soon taking over, discarding the ancient and primitive weaponry in favor of advanced weapons of war. Following both World War I and World War II, the latter which saw the death of 3% of the world population at the time (est. 2.3 billion), both within the first 50 years of the 20th century, humans saw the creation of superior and automatic weapons, radar, missiles, tanks, and at last the atomic bomb, the most powerful human weapon in existence at the time.

After World War II, and for the next 60 years, both the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (which succeeded by the Commonwealth of Independent States) started to compete for power and influence against each other in a period of time known as the Cold War, a non-declared war that led to an arms race and the continuous evolution of human weaponry and destructive potential, both in technology and military tactics and doctrines. One of these developments came to be during the Space Race, with the USSR launching the first satellite and sending the first human, Yuri Gagarin, to space, officially propelling humans as spacefaring, rising to Tier 5 in the scale of Technological Achievement Tiers. The U.S. launched the first human, Neil Armstrong, to the Moon, surpassing the Soviet Union's capabilities, which, after its downfall, effectively made the United States the biggest worldwide influence, something that shaped human society forever.

Consequently, with the creation of the Internet lately in the 20th century, the achievements of this particular era forever revolutionized data processing and communications for humanity. World politics also saw change, with the creation of the United Nations. Once heavy and dominant, religious dogmas saw large decrease in the decision-making of nations around the world with the neutral nature of the new constitutions, as science and logical reasoning and explanations for natural phenomena and methodology rising in popularity and importance. Despite religion still being important to humanity, it only ever lingered on personal ethical codes.

Space colonization

With the new space technology, humans were able to immediately explore the space that surrounded their planet in the 20th century, through the advance in population that went beyond the natural capacity to sustain civilization. This culminated into numerous conflicts over resources, economics, politics and religion on Earth, leading to numerous conflicts. These eventual tensions heavily pressured the species for the centuries to come, with the rise of the Unified Earth Government, which took over the space colonization, exploration, and the representation of the human race. The subsequent Interplanetary War in the 2160s saw a major change in direction for the governance of

humanity, with a vicious conflict which spanned through the solar system, leading the UEG to fully develop in a true governing body to lead majority of Earth's nations. Despite the growing threat of overpopulation on the planet, the discovery of a mysterious artifact performing unknown activities on Jupiter, Mercury and Venus led to the launch of the Ares One mission in an attempt to make contact. On Mars, the team discovered the Traveler, a mysterious UFO which transitioned to Earth. After decades of study, the artifact aided in the discovery and development of Slipspace travel in 2291, helping the UEG and its UNSC to explore and colonize planets beyond the solar system, which put an end into the population worries on Earth.

This expansion, which would be named Domus Diaspora, or the "Golden Age", ushered a new era for mankind, with many of their new colonies, such as Reach, becoming mainstains and offering not only new homes but also deposits to many goods, such as titanium and the revolutionary imulsion, a luminescent, highly volatile, low-viscosity fluid. The expensive implementation of technology, such as construction and development of ships and vessels ensured interstellar travel, communication, and trade. For the following centuries, the AI collective Assembly was helping to ensure the advancements and survival of the human race.

First Contact War

The UEG saw its first real challenge and extraterrestrial contact in 2541 with the discovery of the eliksni, a war-like, martial race, which sparked the First Contact War, the first of two major conflicts against humanity. This period saw the rise of the courageous young UNSC Navy officer Ivar Messer, who became famous for his aspirations. This culminated into Messer becoming a poster-child for the UNSC, using his newfound fame to launch himself into politics. His ruthlessness against the enemy and immense patriotism made way to his ascension into the post of High-Admiral. In the office, Messer became highly critical of the Tribunal system, citing their unwillingness to cooperate in search of endless debates when a direct course of action would be more effective. Seeking to end the war with the eliksni as effectively and quickly as possible, Ivar lobbied for the creation of the Prime Citizen position, which would make his position absolute in the UEG Senate.

His proposal was met with success, much like his election as the first Prime Citizen. His first action would be to completely restructure the government, adapting the Unified Earth Government to the new United Empire of Earth, anointing himself as Prime Minister and severely reducing the roles of the senators. Under his rule, the UEE was able to nearly annihilate the tevarin and conquer their former territory, ushering a new era of expansio and politics.

Second Eliksni War

IdrisIV

The Battle of Idris IV, one of the many engagements of the First Contact War.

At the 27th century's dawn, the remaining eliksni were driven to the outskirts of the Orion Arm, where they organized under the warlord Corath'Thal, who launched a surprise attack against humanity. Their mission was to reclaim their lost territory, invading Jalan, their homeworld which had been reclaimed by the UEE following the war. Despite the colonists and local UNSC forces trying their best to defend the planet. However, on June 24th, 2610, Corath'Thal suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of Squadron 42 during the Battle of Centauri. With most of his fleet destroyed or surrendering to the UNSC, Corath'Thal took his remaining ships in a desperate attempt to invade Jalan, where the tevarin suffered additional 70% casualties, but able to reach the atmosphere.

The UEE continued to advance their territories for the next two centuries, while Messer's power and title were continuously passed down to his children, which continued to rule cruelly than before, sparking the Messer Era, a dark period of oppression and fascism, where the new leaders used the threat of war with the newly discovered tevarin and yahg to subjulgate the empire's population. However, as their power grew, so did its resistance. Representatives from the Outer Colonies, and some from the Inner Colonies, attempted to speak out against the Prime Ministers multiple times, lobbying to secede. These moments were interrupted with multiple disappearances.

United Empire of Earth - Democracy

However, the Massacre of Garron II led the resistance to rally and spark public outcry, where an entire city in the colony of Garron II was bombed, killing hundreds of civilians. When footage of the massacre hit the Internet, the populace decided they had enough, with riots breaking out, and underground movements organizing to start a revolution, where they found an unlikely alliance with the Tevarin Hierarchy, who helped smuggling rebels through UEE-controlled space. Finally, on May 3rd, 2792, Prime Minister Linton Messer XI was overthrown, with Erin Toi claiming the position and restoring the entirety of the senate's power. The Prime Minister stopped being an hereditary autocratic position, but rather one that was elected with a ten year term limit. The reformed UEE attempted to desperately amend for centuries of totalitarianism and abuse, creating documents such as the Fair Chance Act, prohibiting the mining of planets with an advanced chain of life. All the while, the UEE developed a prosperous alliance with the tevarin and the Hierarchy.

Insurrection

One more century of expansion under the newly reformed UEE led to a divide between the Inner and Outer Colonies, the first being enriched and established during the Messer regime, benefiting from centuries of leadership, while the other was responsible for supplying most of the resources that allowed the core planets and Earth to thrive for so many years. As predicted by sociologist Elias Carver, the distrust and discontent from the Outer Colonies with any regimes after the fall of Linton Messer would culminate into brushfire wars that became known as the Insurrection. The conflict became so dangerous that it intimidated the UEE, as they predicted the conflict would escalate into an apocaliptic civil war, leading to the creation of the ORION Project and the SPARTAN-II Program, alongside numerous UNSC campaigns across the colonies. These events led to safer and widespread forms of human augmentation, as SPARTAN supersoldiers started to be produced in large numbers.
