Hank loved reading comic books when he was a child, but other kids made fun of him for it. He also took gymnastics classes over the weekends, and he was phenomenal. As he grew older, he decided to stop taking gymnastics and start playing sports, in order to fit in with his peers.
When Hank turned sixteen, his feet went through a rapid mutation, which turned them into an extra set of hands. At first, he was terrified, but he learned to think it was astounding. He thought this would make him ineligible to play sports. However, when he tried out for football, everyone stopped laughing at him when he became the new quarterback. He began to hang out with the populars, and his grades began dropping.
When his parents told him he had to get his grades up or he couldn't play football, he realized they were right, so he started studying again and he got his good grades back. A couple of days later, someone else on the football team discovered Hank's mutant powers and reported him to the coach, getting him kicked off of the team. But he was offered a chance on an even better team by Charles Xavier, who wanted him on the X-Men. Hank accepted the offer and accepted his place as a mutant.
