Best of friends
During his poor childhood, Frank became friends with Steve Rogers. Together, they pretended to be soldiers in war and would spend hours in the desert beyond the town border. They made pretend guns out of sticks, and pretended rocks were landmines. It was at this time that Frank's parents began to argue, and his mother started hitting him. Out of fear, he didn't tell anyone that he was being hit, and hid the bruises with dirt, which was not uncommon in Sandton.
Frank's parents finally split up when he was twelve. Due to his mother hitting him, he chose to go with his father. It was only after choosing that he found out he would be moving to California. Reluctant at first, Frank was talked into going by Steve, who didn't want him to stay and be beaten just for the sake of them being friends. They promised to write to eachother, and Simpson left to California.
When he arrived in Pasadena, he immediately wrote a letter to Steve. However, the distance between the two meant that it would sometimes take weeks to get a reply. Eventually, the letters slowed down, until neither of them sent anymore. Frank's dad then made him find new friends, not wanting his son to grow up socially awkward. It turned out that due to having lived in Arizona, the other kids at school loved him, and he became popular. But he didn't like it. Going along with the whole thing, he lost sight of who he was, and who he wanted to be.
(Not-So) Reunited At Last
Just after he turned 18, Frank went back to Arizona to be with Steve again. He bought a second-hand truck and drove back to Sandton, Arizona. After two days travelling, he got home and went to Steve's house. As it turns out, Steve had left a week prior to Frank returning to live in New York. Simpson set off straight away, as he'd already packed all his possessions. Upon arriving, he went to Steve's apartment to say hello, and the two were so happy to see eachother they went straight to a bar to drink. He got a job at a market, selling fruits and vegetables. It was through this that he met Peggy Carter, who would later become Steve's fiancee.
