Betty Ross is the daughter of the Red Hulk, and one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top scientists.
Betty doesn't remember much of her mother, as she died when Betty was very young. Her father then strove to be the best father he could be. He encouraged her to take martial arts lessons, which she enjoyed. However, it was the world of science that intrigued her more.
Though her father attempted to persuade her to join the army, she decided to go to college to get a degree. After graduating, she signed on as a scientist for Ross's operation. She began to run experiments on some of the members of his group, to see if they were fit for genetic enhancements.
Gamma SquadBetty was assigned to the Gamma Squad as their top scientist. While on the Gamma Squad, she met Bruce Banner. The two of them fell in love quickly, and her father approved of their relationship. Betty discovered that their former scientist, Samuel Sterns, had isolated gamma radiation and was making his own mutations. A team was sent in, and Bruce was mutated into the Hulk. After he joined the Gamma Squad as their main weapon, instead of their leader, Betty and Bruce's relationship became rocky.
Not long after Bruce had become the Hulk, he had left Gamma Squad and joined the Avengers, who eventually joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Betty left Gamma Squad as well and applied for a job at S.H.I.E.L.D., where she became one of the top scientists. She and Bruce continued their relationship, and he even proposed to her. However, she said no, saying she isn't ready yet.
Eventually, Bruce and Betty grew apart with his constant adventures. He tried hard to keep their relationship alive, but she just couldn't handle it anymore. Betty broke up with Bruce, but they attempted to remain friends. However, Betty knew she still loved him. She planned on talking to him about it, but it was that day that the Avengers had decided to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. After this, Betty knew it was really over. However, Captain America, very uncharacteristically, comforts Betty with her loss and the two even begin a relationship.
When S.H.I.E.L.D. begins forming their new, Supreme Avengers, they plan on using Hulk's blood in order to create their own Hulk. At first they were planning on injecting one of the top agents, Clay Quartermain, but Betty interrupted the meeting and demanded that she become the new Hulk. They agreed and injected her with her ex-boyfriend's blood, and she was transformed into a red, hulking version of her former self. She was given the code name of She-Hulk and was placed on the team, where she would work alongside her new boyfriend, Captain America.
