- They're the bigshots, you know? They get everything. They're treated like celebrities just because they have special powers, and some of them don't even have powers. I've probably done things nobler than some of them. Where's my praise? Oh yeah, I don't get any. Because I don't have powers. It's not fair.
- Carl Fray
Carl's parents did not intend on having a child, but he was conceived the night of their wedding. His parents were very strict with him when he was a child, making him eat healthy, making him exorcise, they pretty much made his every decision for him. When his father was deported to Vietnam his mother dialed back her strict ways so they could be close, but she still encouraged him to make the smart decision for everything, always wanting him to come out on top.
After Carl's mother got a call telling her that her husband had died, she decided not to tell Carl for a little bit. Carl was already going through a tough time at school because he was bullied for getting straight A's and following the rules. When he got to eighth grade, he decided he didn't need to do everything his mother said, so he stopped trying as hard and he was bullied less. His mother finally decided it was time to tell him, and when he learned his father was dead he ran away, just wanting to be alone.
Lost and Found
Carl's mother could not find him on his own, so she called his two best friends, Derrek Gibbons and Jaiden Paris. The two of them scoured Cole's neighborhood, literally looking everywhere. It was nearly hours until Jaiden had the idea to look in the one place Cole feels good about himself: School. Derrek and Jaiden rushed to the High School and Derrek convinced him it was going to be alright and that he could relate, with his father being dead. At first Carl snapped at him, but after lots of confirmation that they are his friends and they will help him through it, he calmed down and agreed to go back home.
